The list of executives from Fortune 500 companies who attended the Children’s Hospital fundraiser was long. But maybe Whitney would remember Irene. Yes, it had been over a year ago, but Whitney had met Irene Davidson there. That was clear from the photo of the two talking at the bar. Maybe Whitney was one of the last people to speak to Irene.

I retrieved Whitney’s card from my purse and crawled into bed with my laptop to do some research. Whitney Crewe bore no connection to the name on the business card—Madam Ella Crewe. Publicly, she was identified as Jack Barnes’ partner. The PPS founder was more well-known than she. Whitney lived with him in a very nice five-bedroom home in the middle of upper-class suburban Illinois. Jack owned a small yacht that he kept in Fort Lauderdale, and Whitney owned a condo in Aspen, Colorado.

She appeared to be the wife of a rich businessman. Her secret life showed a completely different side of her, however. In her website photo, her long blackish hair was brushed out and blown back. Wearing a red bustier under a knee-length leather jacket, she held a whip in one hand. Red lacy panties topped legs sporting tall black boots that rose up to her thighs. Her beautiful face held a punishing expression.

On her Dominatrix website, she shared links and discussions about the BDSM lifestyle. She advertised services that included BDSM, or Bondage, Discipline and Dominance, Submission and Sadomasochism. Her articles posted links to safe-sex websites—SSC, or Safe, Sane, and Consensual, and RACK, Risk Aware Consensual Kink—promoting consensus between partners in BDSM.

Her bio stated that she was a master of Japanese rope tying. There were images of men and women bound by their ankles, wrists, and waists tied to posts and to beds. The erotic photos fascinated me. Every nerve in my skin tingled as I wondered how it felt to be bound in those positions. I scrolled to the bottom where the twitter and Facebook icons encouraged me to follow her. I did.

When my phone rang, I jumped.

Jonathon asked, “How are you tonight?”

“Fine. I’ve been thinking about you. Thinking about Irene and the murders. I wonder if they’re connected. And I’ve been doing some research.”

Dare I tell him about whom?

“I have too.” Jonathon paused. “Listen, Dilip determined that Valerie’s computer wasn’t used to send emails to me. Just her IP address. The original order came from someplace else in Rush Hospital. He’s trying to pinpoint the computer that was used.”

“We should report those findings to Jeff.”

“I will. I’ll call him later and keep you updated.”

I dragged my finger across the website image of a voluptuous, light-haired woman bound with red rope in a kneeling position. The photo intrigued me. “My research is closer to home. It occurred to me that these murders could be more personally driven than we imagined, Jonathon. I’m looking into Irene’s disappearance.”

“Irene Davidson wasn’t a friend. What makes you think her disappearance has anything to do with the recent murders?”

“I found a photo of Irene at the last fundraiser she attended before she vanished.
